The Age Pension
The Age Pension aims to ensure individuals have sufficient income during retirement, providing fortnightly payments to assist with living costs if retirement savings fall below a specific level. Eligibility for the Age Pension is determined by several factors:
- Age Requirement: The qualifying age, which depends on the individual's birth date, ranges from 65 to 67, with a phased increase from 2017 to 2023.
- Wealth Level: An assessment of the individual’s current wealth level is conducted.
- Marital Status: Whether the individual is single or part of a couple is considered.
- Home Ownership: Whether the individual owns their home is also assessed.
Explore Centrelink with Ease!
Centrelink's allowances are designed to provide additional financial support to individuals whose assets and income are below a certain level and who are not eligible for the Age Pension. Eligibility for these allowances is determined by several factors: Special Requirements, Wealth Level, Marital and Home Ownership Status, Assets and Income Tests, Deeming, and Waiting Period.
How am I assessed?
Once an individual reaches the qualifying age for the Age Pension, their wealth, including assets and income, is assessed to determine eligibility. There are two primary tests applied:
The Assets Test: The value of an individual's assets must be below a certain level to qualify for a full pension. If assets are above an upper level, no payment is received, while assets falling between two levels qualify for a part pension. Special gifting rules apply to prevent people from transferring assets to increase Centrelink benefits.
The Income Test: Similar to the assets test, an individual's income must be below a certain level for a full pension and between two levels for a part pension. For couples, incomes are combined for assessment. Deeming rules apply to financial investments, using an assumed rate of income rather than actual income received.
